To choose multiple files and folders user must hold Ctrl and click on desired icons. Now is possible to create checkboxes for icons and use it on old fashion way. 
To enable this option:
Win7:
- into the Start Menu’s search bar type Folder options
- open the “View” tab
- check “Use check boxes to select items” box
Win 8:
- open Windows Explorer
- open the “View” tab
- check the “Item check boxes” box in the Show/Hide pane
